Centerville edges Florida power in double OT

By Staff

One thousand miles, chartered flight, state-ranked and unbeaten opponent? No problem.

Nick Bozzo booted a 19-yard field goal as regulation expired, then converted the winning extra-point kick as Centerville dodged host Naples, Fla., 38-37 in double overtime to highlight Friday night’s area high school football action.

Starting from the 10-yard line, quarterback Will Vance accounted for Centerville’s two OT touchdowns. Naples failed to convert on a two-point try on its second OT touchdown. Following Vance’s 10-yard run for a score, Bozzo delivered his game-winning kick.

It was just one of many firsts for the Elks (5-0), who never had traveled so far for a regular-season game. It also was the first loss for Naples (3-1), a Sunshine State power.

It’s the fourth straight team that had its unbeaten streak snapped by the Elks. That’s why No. 1 Centerville should put more distance on runner-up Colerain in the next release of the Division I, Region 2 computer rankings.
