Elks Beat Fairmont 35-21

In an emotion filled week, the Centerville Elks (6-0, 1-0) shook off a very sluggish first half to beat the Fairmont Firebirds (1-5, 0-1) 35-21.  After such a big win for the program in Florida last Friday, and then the devastating loss of their DB coach and former player just 36 hours later, the Elks pulled together in the second half to beat a very game Fairmont squad that was looking to pull of the major upset.  The Elks were led again on the ground by Damian Popp, who had 268 all-purpose yards with a rushing TD and a very important 85 yard kickoff return just before the end of the first half to tie the score at 15-15, which helped swing the momentum back in the Elks favor.   The Elks then used second half touchdowns from junior QB Will Vance, Popp’s TD, and a late score from senior co-captain Nick Bozzo to help put away the pesky Firebirds.  They were led on defense by junior linebacker Blake Zeller with 10 tackles.   The Elks will now prepare for a highly anticipated match up with the Northmont TBolts next Friday night in Clayton.
